Peptides are short chains of amino acids — smaller than proteins, bigger than single amino acids — that act as signaling molecules in the body. That is the entire honest definition. Everything else you have read, the "heals everything," "reverses aging," "10x recovery" stuff, is marketing sitting on top of a very uneven pile of evidence.
Here is the thing nobody selling you a vial wants to lead with: the quality of evidence varies enormously from one peptide to the next. Two compounds can both be called "peptides" and be separated by a canyon of scientific rigor.
The canyon, in three examples
Take three peptides people lump together:
- BPC-157 is genuinely interesting in animals — a 2025 review describes healing effects on tendon, muscle, and gut tissue in rodents. But that same review is blunt that the work is "limited to small animal models," with essentially no usable human trial data. That is a preclinical story.
- Thymosin β4 (the protein behind TB-500) has decades of animal wound-healing data and a few early-phase human trials in narrow indications like dry eye — but no approval and no human RCT for the "recovery" uses it is marketed for.
- Retatrutide sits in a completely different tier: it has published, randomized, placebo-controlled human trials, including a Phase 2 obesity trial in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Same word — "peptide." Wildly different evidence. If you take one thing from this guide, take that.
How to read a peptide claim without getting played
- Ask what species the study was in. "Increases collagen by X%" usually means in a dish or a rat, not in a person. Both are legitimate science; only one tells you what happens in humans.
- Ask if it was randomized and placebo-controlled. Anecdotes and before/after photos are the weakest possible evidence. A single well-run RCT outweighs a thousand testimonials.
- Separate mechanism from outcome. "Modulates thousands of genes" or "activates VEGF" describes a mechanism. It is not proof of a real-world benefit.
- Check the regulatory reality. Most research peptides are not FDA-approved and are sold as "research chemicals" with no purity guarantee. Some are banned in sport. That context matters as much as any study.
The bottom line
This site tags every peptide with an honest evidence tier for exactly this reason — so you can see at a glance whether a claim is backed by a human randomized trial or by a hopeful rat.
