What it is
BPC-157 ("Body Protection Compound 157") is a stable synthetic pentadecapeptide — a chain of 15 amino acids — based on a partial sequence identified in human gastric juice. It is marketed in the gray/black market as a "healing" or "recovery" peptide, but in the peer-reviewed literature it exists strictly as an experimental compound.
Mechanistically, a 2025 literature and patent review describes BPC-157 acting through multiple pathways, primarily the nitric-oxide system, with reported effects on angiogenesis (via VEGFR2), collagen synthesis, fibroblast activity, and modulation of dopamine and serotonin signaling. Pharmacokinetic work in rats and dogs found a very short half-life of under 30 minutes, rapid degradation into small peptide fragments, and clearance mainly through urine and bile.
What the evidence shows
Here's the honest version: the evidence is preclinical. The 2025 review is blunt that "most, if not all, studies are limited to small animal models (i.e., rats and mice)." In those rodent models, BPC-157 has been reported to accelerate healing of tendon, ligament, muscle, bone, skin, and gastrointestinal tissue, and to show anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
What does not exist is human confirmation. The same review found the human record amounts to one retrospective report in 12 knee-pain patients and a single Phase I safety trial (42 healthy volunteers, 2015) that was cancelled in 2016 before results were ever submitted. So every animal-model result you read about should be treated as a hypothesis, not a proven human benefit. That is why this page carries a preclinical evidence badge — the study types behind it are animal experiments, not human trials.
Risks & unknowns
Formal animal toxicology (mice, rats, rabbits, dogs) reported no serious toxicity at the doses tested, with one reversible finding — a decrease in creatinine in dogs at 2 mg/kg that resolved after a two-week washout. But "no serious toxicity in animals" is not the same as "safe in people," and the human safety profile is simply not established.
Reviewers also raise mechanism-based cautions: because BPC-157 promotes angiogenesis, there is a theoretical concern that it could support tumor growth, and excessive nitric-oxide activity has been linked in other contexts to cellular stress. None of these have been characterized in controlled human studies. Purity is a separate, real-world risk: research-grade material sold online is unregulated and may be mislabeled or contaminated.
Legal / regulatory status
BPC-157 is not an approved drug anywhere in mainstream medicine. In the United States it is not FDA-approved for any indication, and in 2023 the FDA placed BPC-157 in Category 2 of its interim list of bulk drug substances that may present significant safety risks — effectively barring compounding pharmacies from using it for humans. Products sold as "research chemicals" are not authorized for human use. Athletes should note that anti-doping regulators have scrutinized BPC-157, and rules change year to year — check the current WADA Prohibited List before assuming anything.
