What it is
Sermorelin is the biologically active 1-29 fragment of human growth hormone-releasing hormone. It binds to GHRH receptors in the anterior pituitary to increase pulsatile GH secretion. Unlike exogenous hGH, it does not override normal feedback mechanisms and is thought to produce more physiological GH patterns.
What the evidence shows
In children with growth hormone deficiency, sermorelin increases GH levels and improves growth velocity. It was approved as a diagnostic agent and for treatment of idiopathic GH deficiency. In adults, evidence for body composition or anti-aging effects is limited and inconsistent. Most adult use is off-label, compounded, or from wellness clinics, with little high-quality RCT evidence.
Risks & unknowns
In approved pediatric use, sermorelin has generally been well tolerated, with injection-site reactions, flushing, headache, and rare hypersensitivity. In adults, long-term safety is less well studied. Because it raises GH/IGF-1, it carries the same theoretical metabolic and proliferative concerns as other GH-enhancing strategies.
Legal / regulatory status
Sermorelin acetate was FDA-approved for children with growth hormone deficiency, but the original branded product was discontinued. It is available from compounding pharmacies in some jurisdictions. Off-label adult "anti-aging" use is not FDA-approved. In sport, all GH-releasing peptides are prohibited by WADA.
