What it is

Selank is a 7-amino-acid peptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) and a tuftsin analog. It is used in Russia as an intranasal peptide for anxiety. Mechanistic studies suggest modulation of GABAergic, serotonergic, and enkephalin systems, plus effects on BDNF and interleukin expression.

What the evidence shows

Russian clinical trials in generalized anxiety disorder reported reductions in anxiety and cognitive improvement with fewer side effects than benzodiazepines. Animal studies support anxiolytic, anti-stress, and cognitive effects. Independent, large-scale Western RCTs are not available.

Risks & unknowns

Selank is reported as well tolerated, with mild nasal irritation, drowsiness, or headache being the most common effects. Long-term safety data and drug interaction data are limited. Unregulated products may be impure or mislabeled.
