What it is
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA. It is released into circulation and acts as a mitochondrial signaling molecule. It activates AMPK and improves glucose uptake, fatty-acid oxidation, and stress resistance in cells and animals.
What the evidence shows
Animal studies show that MOTS-c improves insulin sensitivity, reduces obesity, and enhances exercise capacity in aged mice. A small human study reported that exercise increases circulating MOTS-c and that MOTS-c levels correlate with metabolic health. Human interventional trials are ongoing but not yet conclusive.
Risks & unknowns
Human safety data are limited. Because MOTS-c affects central metabolic pathways, uncontrolled use could theoretically perturb glucose and lipid metabolism. Long-term effects are unknown.
Legal / regulatory status
MOTS-c is not FDA-approved. It is not specifically listed by WADA as of 2026 but may fall under S0. It is illegal to market for human use.
