What it is
Epitalon is a 4-amino-acid peptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed by the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. It is an analog of epithalamin, a peptide extracted from the pineal gland. It is proposed to activate telomerase and regulate melatonin production.
What the evidence shows
Animal studies and small human trials from Russian researchers suggest improvements in biomarkers of aging, including melatonin rhythm, immune function, and possibly telomere length. A 2003 study reported increased telomerase activity in human somatic cells in vitro. Western independent replication and large RCTs are lacking, so claims of life extension are speculative.
Risks & unknowns
Epitalon has a long history of use in small Russian studies with few reported adverse events. Long-term safety in large, diverse populations is unknown. Unregulated products vary widely in purity.
Legal / regulatory status
Epitalon is not FDA-approved. It is not specifically listed by WADA as of 2026 but may fall under S0. It is illegal to market for human use in the United States.
