What it is
Cerebrolysin is a mixture of low-molecular-weight peptides and amino acids prepared from porcine brain proteins. It is administered by intramuscular or intravenous injection. It is thought to exert neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects similar to endogenous nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
What the evidence shows
Multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses in stroke and Alzheimer's disease have been published, with modest benefits on cognitive and functional outcomes in some analyses. A 2020 Cochrane review of Cerebrolysin for stroke found low-certainty evidence of potential benefit on dependency and neurological deficit. Results are not consistently positive, and quality of evidence varies.
Risks & unknowns
Cerebrolysin is generally well tolerated. Adverse events include dizziness, headache, sweating, and injection-site reactions. Because it is derived from porcine brain tissue, theoretical risk of prion disease has been discussed but not reported. Hypersensitivity is possible.
Legal / regulatory status
Cerebrolysin is approved in several European, Asian, and Latin American countries for stroke and dementia. It is not FDA-approved in the United States. WADA has not specifically listed it as of 2026, but it may be captured under S0.
